Janet and Ben were married at the end of May and chose wonderfully historic venues in the City of London for their wedding ceremony and reception. As a London wedding photographer I have had the opportunity to photograph weddings in some of the city’s most interesting and beautiful buildings, and this Merchant Taylor’s Hall wedding was no exception.
One of the oldest of the livery halls, the stunning Merchant Taylor’s Hall has occupied its current site since the 14th century. Although it was largely destroyed during the 1666 Great Fire of London, parts of the building survived including the library and its books. The Great Hall was a spectacular location for the reception, easily accommodating the 100 or so guests with plenty of room to spare.
The wedding ceremony itself took place in a venue no less magnificent – St Lawrence Jewry, next to the Guildhall. Also destroyed in the Great Fire of London, the church was rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren in 1677, and is now the official Church of the Corporation of London. It must be one of the most beautiful churches I’ve had the pleasure to photograph in.
After the ceremony there was a small window of opportunity for some formal portraits around the Guildhall, including on the aptly named “Love Lane”. Janet and Ben were very relaxed in front of the camera – they were just themselves and managed to ignore us completely, which is so much better for reportage style photography. Once I’ve chosen the location, I can just photograph moments as they happen rather than directing.
After this we headed over to Merchant Taylor’s Hall to photograph the relaxed and celebratory atmosphere of the reception, speeches and dancing.
Thank you to Frances Carlisle for second shooting with me and capturing so many beautiful images, but most of all a huge thank you to Janet and Ben for asking me to photograph their Merchant Taylor’s Hall wedding and to be part of their day.
If you’ve enjoyed looking at my wedding photography from Merchant Taylors Hall, I’d be delighted to hear from you should you be getting married in one of the many beautiful and historic venues this wonderful city has to offer.
